CONDITION OF DALRAY

TRAINER WORRIED ■ (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 9. The trainer, C. C. McCarthy, exercised Jalray at Flemington this morning, and tomorrow he will be given a test gallop. McCarthy said that, although there were no signs of injury, he was still worried about* Dalray. The Sydney “Daily Telegraph’s” turf writer, who is in Melbourne, states that many Melbourne racing men believe that Dalray is on his way to “the scrap heap" of Melbourne Cup winners. The writer quotes a well-known racing man who said: “They .seldom come back. The cup seems to flatten most horses for all time." The writer adds that many thoroughbred experts who have watched Dalray since his return to Australia this autumn have forecast that he would not stand up to a strenuous campaign. Dalray’s price for the Sydney Cup,' to be run at Randwick on April 6, is now twice as lofig as it was before he raced in Melbourne on Saturday. The brilliant Sydney horse Carioca, which has won eight of his last nine races, is now favourite for the Cup. Bookmakers doubt whether Dalray can Win the Cup with 9-7 against Carioca with 8-9. Carioca is also favourite for the Doncaster Handicap, one mile, to be run on April 4. But he is likely to be withdrawn from that race and reserved for the Sydney Cup. Red Jester’s failure in the .North Island Challenge Stakes in New Zealand on Saturday has caused his price for the Doncaster to lengthen, and he is now on the fifth line of betting behind seven other horses.
