SIRED ' DAMS OF WAKATU AND GENDARME

Salmagundi gained further posthumous fame as a brood mare sire when Gendarme won the North Island Challenge Stakes and Wakatu the Railway Handicap at T tenth am on Saturday. Salmagundi sired their respective dams, Sal and Cruden

Bay. Both Gendarme and Wakatu are three-year-olds. and they were both purchased at the national yearling sales. Gendarme was bred at Mr J. A. Mitchell’s Santa Rosa Stud, and he was bought by Mr W. S. Goosman for 750 gns. He soon became a cheap horse and he is doing much to keep Mr Goosman well in the lead on the list of winning owners this season.

Sal, dam of Gendarme, won two races, and her sister Psalm, won nine, including the Dunedin Guineas and the McLean Stakes. Psalm later left The McDonough when mated with‘Soxbridge. Venite. dam of Sal and Psalm, won nine races up to a mile and a quarter in Otago and Southland, and the next dam. Andante. won five.

Wakatu cost'sir Ernest Davis 2900gns as * yearling, but in his first season he won £3040. the result of four wins and three minor placings. He was disappointing in his spring racing this season, but he was back on the winning path again at Ellerslie on January 31 wntrt he led all the way over six furlongs. At his next start ne outclassed the sprinters at Te Aroha, which led to his clear-cut win on Saturday. Cruden Bay. dam of Wakatu, is by Salmagundi from Lochlaggan, a daughter of Mr Alex Chisholm’s great mare Glentruin Cruden Bay wort - three races, Lochlaggan 10. and Glentruin 21.
