The Olympic sprint swimming champion, Clarke Scholes, of Michigan State University, broke the New Zealand 100 yards record by I.7sec in a short limit handicap race at the Olympic pool, Newmarket, on Saturday evening. His time of 52.1 sec beat the record of 53.8 sec set by P. Hanan in 1940. Scholes conceded four seconds to the New Zealand champion, W. M. Amos, and beat him by several yards. At the end of the first 55 yards he was about two feet ahead of Amos, but by means of a tremendous thrust from the wall he gained at least two more feet. Scholes later beat Amos and other competitors in a 55 yards scratch race in 27.65ec. * Results were:— 100 Yards Invitation Short Limit Handicap.—C. Scholes (United States) 1, R.
