18FOOTER TRIALS GOSSIP WINS FIRST RACE Gossip, sailed by Graham Mander, won the first trial race at Lyttelton on Saturday to select a fleet of six 13-footers to represent Canterbury in the mterprovlneial contest to be held at Lyttelton on March 28 and 29 £or ., ti L e l P aV m r trophy. Marilyn, sailed by Elliot Sinclair finished second, 33sec astern of the winner. Intrigue, world 18-footer champion, sailed by Peter Mander, carried away some of her gear while leading in the last round, and retired. Majestic (K. Helllwell) was the only other yacht to finish from seven starters, the others being Malaya <R. G. Moor). Marlene (R. Priddy), and Daveln (C. Banks). Two more triajs will be sailed, the six yachts being selected on the points system. The race was sailed in a fresh to strong north-easterly wind and a heavy sea. Intrigue broke a shackle just before the start and was two minutes late in crossing. Marilyn was first to cross in a flying start, next in order being Malaya, Marlyn, Daveln, Majestic, and Gossip. At the Pile Light, Marilyn was three seconds ahead of Gossip, Marlene, Malaya. Daveln and Majestic being next. Marlene had some trouble with gear and retired. It was hard slogging on the beaUdown to the weather mark off Battery Point, but Intrigue made a great showing, sailing into second place astern of Marilyn just as the latter turned the mark. The heavy seas near the mark were too much for Malaya, and she capsized. Daveln retired and ran for the moles under a jib only. On the run for the Pile, Marilyn managed to keep ahead of Intrigue to round with 15 seconds to spare. Gossip was in third position, with Majestic a long way astern. On the beat for the buoy for the second time, Intrigue soon sailed into first place and held it till the ffiishap in the final round. An exciting contest followed betwen Marilyn and Gossip. Marilyn, by using her spinnaker, forced Gossip to do the same, with the result that Gossip drew away and held a small lead to the finishing line. The race started at 2.20 p.m. and the finish was: Gossip (G. Mander). 3.51.11, 1; Marilyn (E. Sinclair). 3.51.44, 2; Majestic (R. Helliwell). 4.11.15, 3. RACE FOR EVANS BAY TROPHY A race for the Evans Bay trophy, held by the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-boat Club at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon, v’as won easily by Psyche, sailed by C. F. Dann. Celeste (O. Ba’chop) capsized. The start was at 2.25 p.m., and the result was: Psyche (C. F. Dann), 3.44.50, 1; Airline (O. Reid). 3.47.20 , 2; Hell Sell (A; Collins) 3. WAIAU CUP There were four starters in the race for the Waiau Cup. which was conducted at Lyttelton yesterday by the Waimakariri . Sailing Club. Intrigue (P. Mander) was first with a time of 4hr 12min 45sec, Marilyn was second, 4hr 22min 27sec, and Marlene was third, 4hr 33min 30sec. Gossip (G. Mander) retired. The race began at. 2.40 p.m. D. G. SULLIVAN CUP Thirty boats of all classes, representing three clubs, competed fox* the D. G. Sullivan Cup, in a race conducted by the Pleasant Point Yacht Club yesterday. A patchy wind made conditions trying. The race was sailed over a triangular course of six miles. All boats finished within three minutes, and several crossed the finishing line together. Results:— N. D. Walker, Clyde (Mount Pleasant Boating Club) 1, P. Piesse. Treasure (Pleasant Point Yacht Club) 2; R. Frost, Mataura (Pleasant Point Yacht Club) 3; Enterprise (Mount Pleasant Boating Club) ‘ I COMBINED CLASS RACE Zest, skippered by A. Franklin, had a good win in a combined class race, sailed by the Christchurch Yacht Club on Saturday morning. Results were:—Zest (A. Franklin) 1, Gloria (R. Ayling) 2, Zeus ; (J. Palmer) 3. Witch and Boreas capsized.

Remanded.— -In the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, before Mr S. F. Marshall, J.P., and Mr F. E. Burrell, J.P., a man, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was remanded to appear today on a charge of stealing six motor tyres valued at £Bl on dates between September 1 and February 21, 1953. Bail of £5O with one surety of £5O was allowed.
