CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
DEDICATION SERVICES HELD YESTERDAY
Services of dedication were held in the First Church of Christ, Scientist at Christchurch yesterday. Although the building has been open for nearly 17 years, dedication services have been delayed until all indebtedness has been paid. A special message for yesterday’s occasion was sent by the board of directors of the mother church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, and at the conclusion of both services a historical sketch of the growth of Christian Science in Christchurch, was delivered.
Christian Science was first studied in Christchurch in 1905, and a Christian Science Society was formed in 1907, with the holding of regular services. In August, 1911, the society became a church, and in 1912 gave the first authorised Christian Science lecture ever delivered in New Zealand. A property at the corner of Latimer square and Madras street was purchased in 1914, and the building on it opened for regular services.
