AMALGAMATION
Sir, —The move to widen the amalgamation petitions to cover the whole of the urban area of Waimairi County is to be applauded. Could the sponsors not go a step further and bring in all the urbaij areas of Heathcote county as well? It is utterly illogical and unjust that the city should be saddled with all the backward and neglected urban areas from the counties while the rich and well-developed county suburbs stay out. By the simple device of separate riding accounts the Fendalton, Wairarapa . and Cashmere ridings have avoided paying a single penny towards the development of the poorer ridings of their counties. They would willingly now have this burden, which they have never shouldered, loaded on to the backs of the sturdier and less selfish people of the city. Surely even Fendalton’s “First Citizen” must see that this is a travesty of justice.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. February 21, 1953.
