Parcell Beats Daly In Mile

WILLIAMS WINS THREE MILES

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 22. J. Parcell, of Canterbury, created a surprise by winning the mile in good time at the New Zealand athletic championships at Carisbrook on Saturday. He beat the national resident record holder, J. Daly, of Canterbury, and the Olympic Games runner, G. Hoskins, of Auckland, in the most thrilling race of the meeting. But it was to Daly that Parcell owed his victory. In a battle of tactics to beat Hoskins, Daly lost the race. The way was then clear for a sprint by Parcell from well back, to win his first senior title in national track competition. The Canterbury team again demonstrated its strength in distance events when K. Williams won the three-mile event. Though suffering from a severe back disability. Williams forced himself round lap after lap of the track. L. King, of Auckland, set the pace, but Williams kept close on his trail and began to take the odd lap during the later stages. King had only his one long, loping pace and Williams was able to take the lead early in the last lap. He won by 25 yards. Daly started in the three miles only because of the chance of Williams having to withdraw as a result of his injury. When he saw Williams running so well, Daly withdrew. D. Jewett Impresses

Southland’s D. Jewett dominated the 220 yards and the 440 yards. He won both by decisive margins. A small, compact athlete, Jewett showed a marked superiority in both events, and especially in the 440 yards, which he won by 12 yards. A former Otago athlete, J. Hyslop, now of Canterbury, won both walks from a promising Auckland athlete. Peter Killreigel. It was Hyslop’s tenth national meeting.

H. R. Carter, of Auckland, was fortunate to retain his 100 yards sprint title. S. Dawson, of Otago, won both his earlier runs in even time, but a thigh’muscle injury forced him to withdraw from the final after starting. Carter won by a yard In lO.lsec.

The Olympic representative, George Hoskins, of Auckland, won the 880 yards title from Noel Wilson, also of Auckland. It was the only championship Hoskins won at the meeting. The title-holder, John Borland, of Otago, caused a surprise when he failed to jump 6ft in the high jump and did not gain a place. Peter Wells won the title with a leap of 6ft 3in. Borland holds the resident record at 6ft sin. The marathon was won by A. Lydiard, of Auckland, who finished full of running a good minute ahead of M. D. Munro, a former Canterbury competitor, now of Southland. Lydiard was second last year.
