FIGHTING IN KOREA
ENEMY ATTACK OVER NAM RIVER (Rec. 11 p.m.) SEOUL, January 21. About 100 North Korean soldiers waded ...through the icy Nam river on the Korean eastern front early this morning and attacked Allied positions on the south bank. An Bth Army’ spokesman said the defenders drove the North Koreans back over the river after a 40-minute fight. Allied artillery and mortar fire harassed the Communists as they fell back over the river. Officers said the Communist attack was a reply to South Korean probing attacks in the area in the last few weeks. United Nations tanks kept up their battering of Communist positions along the central front yesterday, ana claimed to have destroyed 50 more Communist bunkers. Action along the rest of the front was confined to minor patrol clashes. Pilots of American Sabre jets claimed they had destroyed six MIG 15’s near the Yalu river in North Korea today. A sth Air Force spokesman said one destruction claim had been confirmed, but the other five had not yet been verified. The spokesman added that the Sabres, taking advantage of the clearing weather, had patrolled “MIG alley” in strength and further claims from pilots were expected.
