HOW BRITONS SPEND THEIR MONEY

(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. The amount of money spent in shops in Britain in 1952 averaged £lOO a head, but varied widely in different parts of the country, according to a Government report on the retail trade.

The. figures show that 40 per cent, of all retail trade is handled by “small shops” that have no branches. More than 2,250,000 people work in shops and handle nearly £5,000,000,000 worth of goods each year. Their wages bill is nearly £400,000,000.

Of the total turnover of £5.000.000,000, food shops take 42 per cent., clothing 18 per cent., furniture 5 per cent., and hardware 4 per cent Another 9 per cent, is taken by confectioners, newsagents and tobacconists.
