NEW BUILDINGS AT LINCOLN

PROGRESS REPORTED TO BOARD

The board of governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, was pleased with reports yesterday morning on progress with new buildings. In the last year many set-backs have been reported, but members said it now’ seemed that there would be more satisfaction.

In the new dormitory block the contractors had almost finished, and subcontracts had been let for furnishings, said the Director (Dr. M. M. Burns). A built-in bed unit had been planned by the Ministry of Works, and a sample had been made up for inspection. After consulting the Department of Health and the North Canterbury Hospital Board, Dr. Burns recommended that foam-rubber mattresses be provided. The matron had agreed to make drapes and curtains. The contractors had made good initial progress in preparing the site for the refectory block, the fives court and old buildings being demolished and trees .cleared. All reinforcing steel, sound timber, and galvanised iron sheeting had been salvaged. The Young Farmers’ Club memorial hall site had been cleared by the contractors and a start made on foundations.

The engineering workshops should be completed this month.

The contract had been let for the new laundry and boiler house, and an early start was expected.
