BRAHMS’S “REQUIEM”

Sir, —Referring to your contributor’s comments on the excellent rendering of this melodious but difficult choral work, I do not agree with the assertion that the, chorus, “How Lovely are Thy Dwellings Fair,” was sung too slowly. The score is marked

“Con moto moderate” crochet equal 92; and it is my opinion that the conductor accorded this movement its correct interpretation. For nearly 20 years the “Requiem” was sung annually by the Cathedral Choir and the chorus in question, frequently as an anthem. Throughout the period the choristers were instructed to memorise the time. Mr Field-Dodg-son, being one of them, would assuredly have retained an accurate recollection of Dr. Bradshaw’s directions. A pleasing feature of Saturday night’s performance by the Royal Choral Society was the attainment of real pianissimo effects by chorus and orchestra when accompanying the soprano soloist—so difficult to achieve in the ordinary course.—Yours, etc., W. H. WARREN. November 10, 1952.
