STREET BRAWL IN AUCKLAND
magistrate sentences PARTICIPANTS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 11. When a sailor was knocked to the S’ound and kicked by three men in arby street on Saturday night, one of the worst brawls that Auckland had known in years developed. SubInspector J. H. Dennehy told Mr C. M. Astley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Nearly 3000 persons collected, a constable and warders were kicked and punched, and the men under arrest were freed by hostile citizens, said Sub-Inspector Dennehy. At one stage, things nearly got out of • control and a nasty situation developed. The Magistrate sent four of the men involved to prison and fined two others £lO. The other men arrested will be dealt with later in the week. “Auckland is having too much of this,” the Magistrate said. “The conduct followed wasteful and excessive drinking.” The following men were sentenced:— Henning Anderson, aged 32, a painter, two months’ imprisonment with hard labour on two charges of assault, one of resisting a constable and one of obstructing a constable, the terms to be concurrent. Archibald Alexander Mclnteer, aged 22, a driver, one month’s imprisonment for obstructing the police. John Griffen, aged 30, a labourer, one month’s imprisonment for assault. James Francis Judd, aged 25, a greaser, one month’s imprisonment for obstructing the police. Jack White, aged 20, warehouseman, and Ronald Davis Thomson, aged 20, a storeman, wefre each fined £lO for obstructing the police.
