SARAPU BEATS PURDY (New Zealand Press Association) e AUCKLAND. November 11. n™ the 1952 Australia and New Zealand chess championships, between C J. S. Purdy (Australia) and O. Sarapu (New Zealand), ended soon after 11 o clock last evening in a win for Sarapu. The game lasted' for more than five hours. Purdy resigned at the fortyfifth move. J
Purdy and Saranu are the only contenders for the title. There will be 10 f.l’FflT 1 ” th £ which will not end until November 29. The second game will begin at 6 o’clock this evening. About 50 people watched the two men play last night. Twenty-eight-year-old Sarapu. an Estonian, who came to New Zealand in 1950, is the New Zealand champion He won the toss and used tne Huy Lopez opening. Purdv is champion of Australia and Australian correspondence chamnion. He is at present competing in the. world correspondence championship.
