U.N. APPEAL FOR CHILDREN
£5500 COLLECTED IN CHRISTCHURCH
The amount collected in the Christchurch district lor the United Nations Appeal for Children is £5500, according to the chairman of the Christchurch committee (Mr G. C. C. Sandston). This Is £17,500 short of the district quota of £23,000.
“The greatest general support has come from children,” said Mr Sandston. “Schools in Christchurch so far have given more than £7OO. and donations are still opining in. The children’s support has been magnificent. The appeal seems to have caught their imagination."
Soldiers of the Southern Military District had given £157 16s lO.ld including £133 0s |d from Burnham Camp. This was particularly pleasing, because one Of the principal countries in Europe assisted by the fund was Greece, where the poverty was appalling, said Mr Sandston. The Commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier J T. Burrows), in forwarding the donation, had written:—“l feel this result proves that the assistance rendered by the people of Greece to our soldiers has not and will not, be forgotten by those soldiers and their sons.”
Members of the appeal committee will have a tent at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show today, tomorrow, and on Friday to receive donations. On November 15, the Christchurch Repertory Theatre Society will give a special matinee of Major Barbara,” and the proceeds will be given to the appeal.
