RUNNING OF NEW BUSES

PAPARUA COUNCIL’S APPROVAL SOUGHT

The Christchurch Transport Board had applied to the Main Highways Board for permission to operate its new busec with tyre pressures of 901 b on main highways, and would like to know whether the Paparua County Council would give consent for the buses to operate on roads in the county not subject to Main Highways Board grants, said the general manager of the board (Mr J. F. Fardell) in a letter received by the council on Monday evening. Mr Fardell said the gross laden weight of the buses would not apply to routes within the Paparua county, as each bus would carry only a partload so far from the city. Maximum loading conditions would occur only twice a day, and would obtain within the Christchurch city area, for which authorisation to run the buses had already been given. The 751 b tyre pressure restriction was a regulation for rural roads, and did not apply except for those roads which led to back country rural areas, Mr Fardell said. It should not be a condition for main highways. The County Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) said that State and main highways had to be crossed by buses going on to county roads. The chairman (Mr W. F. McArthur) said that, until a reply was received from the Main Highways Board, the council could not reply to the Transport Board's request. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, the County Engineer and the County Clerk.
