SWIMMING

CONDITION OF POOLS NO COMPLAINTS TO CITY COUNCIL At no time had the baths and entertainment committee received any complaint about baths under its control, said the chairman of the committee (Cr. L. Christie) when the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) drew the attention of the City Council last evening to statements made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in Christchurch. The president (Mr Rex Moore) was reported as saying that some pools he had seen recently were in a disgusting state because local bodies had the idea that swimming pools should be made to pay. Miss D. Brown (Canterbury) suggested that sport should seek its .own representation on city councils. The Mayor said that representatives from other parts of the country had been quick to express satisfaction with what their local bodies were doing for them, but no Christchurch representative had apparently anything to say to this effect and that tended to cast a reflection on the Chiistchurch council. Cr. Christie said that it had come as a shock to him and the committee to read these statements. When the committee had met various associations they had rather expressed thanks for the assistance thby were receiving. He added that the committee at all times would be willing to meet any deputation to discuss such matters. Cr. Christie said that the committee had received no written complaints whatever.
