380 AFRICANS GO TO GAOL

DEFIANCE OF RACIAL LAWS CAPE TOWN, October 20. A total of 380 African “passive resisters” were sentenced today for defying the Government racial segregation laws in five towns in South Africa. They all refused to pay the fines imposed and went to gaol. Six juveniles- among the accused in one town were sentenced to six strokes of the cane. The largest number of resisters appeared in Court at Peddie, in Cape Province, where 279 were sentenced while 21 appeared in Bloemfontein, 19 in Durban, 39 in East London, and 22 in Jansenville.
