NATIVE RIOT IN AFRICA
POLICE RESTORE ORDER CAPE TOWN, October 20. Port Elizabeth’s African suburb of New Brighton was quiet today after the riots on Saturday night, when 11 persons, including Your Europeans, were killed. Police, reinforced ’by squads from outlying districts, today manned key points and patrolled the European areas of Port Elizabeth. A police statement said that no arrests had yet been made. The statement said that the riot began when the police tried to arrest two Africans for the alleged theft of two drums of paint from the railway station. South African insurance companies today announced increased premiums for insurance against fire risks from riots and civil commotion.
Delegates at the annual meeting of companies in Cape Town said that they were not alarmed by the situation, but the public must expect a rise in premium rates.
