TAURANGA’S MAYOR

MR WILKINSON INCREASES MAJORITY (New Zealand Press Association) TAURANGA, October 21. Mr L.- R. Wilkinson has increased his majority of 952 in the Tauranga Mayoral election to 985. In the final results released today by the Returning Officer (Mr L. Butters) Mr F. N. Christian’s votes increased from 811 to 838, and Mr L. D. Lee’s votes from 628 to 663. The election was caused by the resignation last month for health reasons of Mr W. E. Barnard, former Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mr Wilkinson was Mayor of Tauranga from 1935 to 1950. He is a member of the Tauranga Hospital Board, chairman of the Tauranga Rehabilitation Committee, and holds the Returned Services’ Association life membership gold badge. He was formerly president of the New Zealand Municipal Electricity Supply Authorities’ Association, and was a former member of the executive committee of the New Zealand Municipal Association.
