MARITEA’S WIN AT WINTON

HORSE NOMINATED FOR N.Z. OAKS Maritea, a novice winner at the Winton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, has been nominated for the New Zealand Oaks at Riccarton next month. Royal Light, another novice winner at Winton,' is an entrant' for the Otaio Plate. Maritea, which is trained bv J. R. Cochrane for Mr A. M. ' Ussher, Gore, should develop good staying form. She was having only her third race on Saturday, and she had to be hard ridden in the middle stages and early in the run home, but she won going away. Maritea is bred on sound staying lines. She is by Finis from Invest, by Beaulivre from Golden Blonde, by Defoe from Crisis, by Polydamon. Invest was of little value as a race mare, and she was retired early. Mr ■Ussher bought her at the dispersal sale of the late Mr A. Mclntosh’s Invercargill stud Golden Blonde was a good winner when raced in the North Island. Royal Light Succeeds Royal Light easily won the first division of the Barkly Plate at Winton, after being in front all the way. It was a smart performance, and this four-year-old should not be troubled to win again in stronger company. A chestnut gelding by Royal Chief, Royal Light is the first of tile produce of Soft Light, a Siegfried mare from Kindly Light, by Chief Ruler from Razzle Dazzle, by Kilbroney from imported Simper. Soft Light is beautifully bred, and she could establish one of the most successful branches of the famous Simper line. Formal showed good speed to win the second division of the Barkly Plate. He gave the leaders several lengths from the half-mile, and beat them decisively. Formal, by Lo Zingaro, is a four-year-old half-brother to good winners in Formation and Magnaform, and he is closely related to Platform, Tauramai, Charmaine, and Passaform, which all raced with considerable success. Riccarton Trip Planned Surrey Gold is almost certain to run in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton on November 8 if he does well in the meantime, according to his trainer, F. Smith. This Gold Nib colt brilliantly won the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham on Saturday. He will be a strong favourite if he runs in the Riccarton event. Holland to Ride Prawns N. B. Holland, the leading jockey last season, will ride Prawns in the Watkins Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Prawns ran a sound race in the mile Wainui Handicap last Saturday. He was near the tail of the field at the halfmile, but finished brilliantly for tenth, little more than four lengths behind the winner. One of the last of the stock of Salmagundi racing in the main handicaps, Prawns is a seven-year-old gelding trained by D. P. Wilson for Mr A. Chisholm, jun. Jockey’s New Post The Trentham jockey, J. A. McFarlane, will move to Hastings soon to take up the position of private trainer .for Mr J. Wattie, owner of Commodore and other gallopers. For some time Mr Wattle’s horses have been trained by J. H. Jefferd, whose retirement- was announced yesterday. McFarlane, who intends' to continue riding, is a much-travelled jockey; and has ridden In South Africa, India, and Australia. He served his apprenticeship with H. E. Gray, L. G. Morris, and J. S. Shaw, and has been attached to the stables of H. A. Telford and J. H Jefferd at different times
