THE WATKINS HANDICAP

PROMISING HORSES ELIMINATED RE-ENTRY CLAUSE WOULD BE VALUABLE Young handicap horses of the ability of Gardez, Wembley, Huatoki, and Exiled King have been eliminated with 14 others from the Watkins Handicap, the principal event and the first leg of the double on the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Those eliminated had been weighted from 7-8 down. With so many promising light-weights missing from the field, the race will lack much of the usual Trentham quality, and the omissions will possibly ease the task of the top-weights. The Wellington Racing Club does not follow the Canterbury Jockey Club’s practice of giving up to six horses balloted out the right of reentry in the event of scratchings. That is unfortunate. It is quite possible that for a variety of reasons—breakdowns, changes in track conditions, and so on—one or more of the 23 horses left in the field could drop out on or before race day. With a re-entry clause, some of the horses dropped from the field would have been given an opportunity to run. And it is remarkable how many races have been won during the last few years by horses which could not run unless there were scratchings. Gardez would have been one of the early favourities for the Watkins Handicap after his close third in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, when he was having his first race in open company. Gardez was weighted at 7-5 for the Watkins Handicap.

He has been nominated for the Pearce Handicap on the third day of the meeting, but with the likelihood of another big field for that race, there is still a strong possibility that he will again be eliminated. The Pearce Handcap is'run over a mile, and some of the sprinters will probably swell the number of acceptors.

Huatokl won the Wainui Handicap on Saturday. It was his first win in open company, but it did not give him enough weight to stop his elimination from the Watkins Handicap field. Huatoki’s weight was 7-8, and with Wembley, he was one of the last to be dropped from the field. Wembley did not run on the first day of the meeting, but he won the Masterton Handicap a week earlier under 7-0. He beat Topmast and Ehine into the minor places. Exiled King was unplaced in the Wellington Handicap last Saturday. This Beau Repaire gelding has not yet won in open company, but he has given several credit-, able performances. His best effort was his close second to Dalray in the Autumn Handicap, of two miles, at Trentham in. March. Topmast is another of the eliminated horses which, would have given the race considerable Interest, and would have helped to ensure that the horses nearer the top of the handicap would have to carry their weight all the way. Kumara Club Shows Profit A profit of £455 9s 4d for last season was shown in the annual report and bal-ance-sheet of the Kumara Racing Club, which was presented at the club’s annual meeting recently. The main sources of income were totalisator revenue (£2940 2s 2d) and gate takings (£265 ss). The distribution of stakes amounting to £1199 was the main item of expenditure. The embankment constructed last year had done much to avoid the crush at the annual fixture, said the president (Mr W. H. G. Stewart) in his report. Totalisator facilities and parking space had still been overtaxed, however, and it was planned to rectify this in the near future, he said.
