AIR RACE

Sir, —Never before in New Zealand’s history has so much money been wasted—£ss,ooo “to prove we have the best landing ground in Australia and New Zealand?’ and “give New Zealand some much-needed publicity.” What right has the county council liberally to give our money? We don’t pay rates for air race prize money. I suggest that the air race be abandoned and the money already raised be given to the United Nations appeal for children. £55,000 will do more for improving New Zealand’s international significance and have a more lasting effect than the air race. Even if it is impossible to abandon the air race one would expect the firms and councils to give as generously to the United Nations appeal for children, and the £55,000 thus raised would “give New Zealand some muchneeded publicity.”—Yours, etc., Y.P.G. October 6, 1952.
