FEWER POSITIONS VACANT STATISTICS FOR SEVEN MONTHS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 7. Every month this year there have *ewer and fewer vacant jobs notified to the Labour and Employment Department. During the year tne number of “disengaged persons” J* th n« e ? d^ f each month has risen from 36 to 70. According to tables in the September Abstract of Statistics, between January and July the total number /L°™ ed , vacan cies fell from 22,225 to 16,379. Vacancies for men dropped from 13,795 to 11,379, and those for women from 8430 to 5000. The number of ‘‘disengaged men” rose from 19 to 50 in the seven months ended in July. Except for a drop to five “disengaged women” in April, the figures in this category were steady, with an average of fewer than 16. The number of placements in a month increased in March and fell in April, but was otherwise fairly steady. So far this year the average number of persons disengaged at tne end of each month was 43. The abstract gives the following average figures for “disengaged perlons’ for the last six years: 1946, 386; 1947, 92; 1948, 67; 1949, 92; 1950, 38; 1951, 38.

At the end of July neither Wellington, Lower Hutt, n_or Auckland had any "disengaged persons.” Figures for other towns and districts were: other North Island towns, 15; Christchurch, 11; Dunedin, 31; other South Island towns, 13.
