GUIDED MISSILE DEFENCE
BATTALIONS FORMED IN U.S. WASHINGTON. October fl. The United States Army announced today that it was forming anti-aircraft battalions armed with guided missiles able to track down and destroy aeroplanes 10 miles away at an altitude of more than six miles. The new units are expected to be ready next year. The Army said that the organisation of the missile battalions was justified by the success In producing and testing the missiles. The training of officers and men for the new battalions already is under way at the guided missile centre of Fort Bliss. Texas, and at the White Sands (New Mexico) proving ground. Intensive study also is under way to determine which areas of the United States eventually will be defended by the guided missile units. Other units are expected to continue to use conventional anti-aircraft guns for the time being, especially in areas where protection might be needed against medium and low-flying aircraft.
