TOUR BY DUCHESS OF KENT
Visit To Malayan Rubber Estate SINGAPORE, October t. The Duchess of Kent today visited a rubber estate in Malacca and saw personally how the planters and their wives live and work in terroristridden Malaya. Accompanied by the young Duke of Kent, sbt travelled in an armoured convoy past flooded paddy fleld* and wallowing water buffaloes, rubber and palm oil plantations, 13 miles into country once notorious for terrorists, and still plagued occasionally by them.
The Duchess was taken on to the Tertam estate, managed by a Scotsman. Mr W. G. Ross, who lives with his wife in * hill-top bungalow overlooking miles of rubber trees. The Duchess passed the guarded entrance and then through a gate in a high wire-mesh fence surrounding the bungalow. The special constables, who are constantly on guard, were today reinforced by Gordon Highlanders, who patrolled the outlying areas. Five constables were murdered by terrorists on thi* estate a year ago and one terrorist with 10,000 dollar* on his head was killed there.
