WAFD PARTY TO REORGANISE
MR NAHAS REPLACED AS LEADER CAIRO, October 6. The Wafd Party, which is the biggest in Egypt, tonight registered under the Naguib Government’s “purge or dissolve” order without Mr Mustafa Nahas as its leader. The reorganised party executive announced that Mr Nahas, who was seven times Egyptian Prime Minister, had been made an honorary president of the party for life. The party’s notification of registration was presented to Mr Oleiman Hafez, the Vice-Premier and Minister of the Interior, by Mr Nahas’s successor. Mr Adb el Salaam Fahmy Gomma. a member of the Wafd “Old Guard.” and president of the dissolved Chamber of Deputies. The move marked the end of the Wafd’s defiance of the Prime Minister
(General Naguib), who had ordered that all political parties must reorganise and register. The decision was taken at an executive meeting held today to reconsider the party’s refusal some days ago to comply with General Naguib’s decree. In a letter to the Minister of the Interior presenting the statutes of the reorganised Wafd Party, its new leader said: “The Wafd now feels the need to double its efforts to realise the common objectives of the Army and the Wafd.” The Wafd would continue to be inspired by Mr Nahas and would follow his plan for the liberation of the Nile Valley,, he said.
