BY-ELECTIONS IN BRITAIN

INTEREST IN WYCOMBE SEAT fSpecial Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, October 7. Six by-elections are pending in Britain. Chief interest will be centred on one at Wycombe, since of the others four will be in practically unassailable Labour constituencies and the fifth in a Conservative stronghold. Wycombe was won at the General Election by Mr William Astor, who will go to the House of Lords as the result of the death of his father, Viscount Astor. Mr A.stor’s opponent last year was Mr John Haire. The Conservative majority was 1753. Mr Haire, who will contest the by-election, won the seat from the Conservatives in 1945, and held it in 1950 with a majority of 476.
