LAWYERS’ GOLF MATCH

ANNUAL COMPETITION FOR HUNTER CUP

More than 50 members of the Canterbury District Law Society—probably a record number—competed in the annual golf match for the W. J. Hunter Cup, played at the Shirley course yesterday. In perfect weather, with the course in first-class order, the competition was won by Mr R. C. Saunders with a score of 1 up. Mr K. J. McMenamin, last year’s winner, with Messrs A. T. Bell and W. K. L. Dougall, was second equal, all square. After the match all members of the Canterbury District Law Society were the guests of the president (Dr. A. L. Haslam) and Mrs Haslam at afternoon tea in the golf house. The entrance hall, dining and sitting rooms had been most effectively decorated by Mesdames Haslam, Terence Gresson, E. C. Champion, and C. G. Penlington, and the arrangements for the golf match were carried out by Mr P. Wynn-Williams. Mrs Haslam wore a blue-grey jacket suit, with a white blouse and smart sapphire blue felt hat with touches of whiter Her gloves and bag matched her hat... After tea she presented the cup to Mr Saunders and the women’s putting prize to. Mrs H. P. Lawry, who tied with Mrs A. T. Bell hnd won on a count-back. Later in the afternoon members of the society entertained their wives and many guests at a well attended and very pleasant cocktail party, held at the Mayfair Lounge. Dr. and Mrs Haslam received the guests, Mr R. A. Young (chairman) and his social committee carried out all the arrangements, and Mrs Young was responsible for the artistic floral decorations. The principal guest of honour, the Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft, was unable to be present, as he is sitting on the Appeal Court in Wellington, but Lady Northcroft and Miss Nancy Northcroft attended the party at the Mayfair.

Pollock (Registrar of the Supreme Court) and Mrs Pollock, Mr J. Laurie (District Land Registrar) and Mrs Laurie, Mr A. Whittaker (Magistrate’s Court), Mr D ,- Evans (Assistant Commissioner of Stamp Duties) and Mrs Evans, Mr M. C. Murphy (Superintendent of Police) and Mrs Murphy, Dr. C. Sheppard (president Canterbury branch of the British Medical Association) and Mrs Sheppard, Mr and Mrs J R. Cunmgham, Mr and Mrs G. H. M. Walton, Lady Blair, Mrs M. H. Godby (president of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club), Mrs E. C. Lewey, Mrs H. P. Lawry, Mrs H. A. Young, Mrs E. D. Mosley, Mrs O. T. J. Alpers, and Mr R. E. Smith (president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants) and Mrs Smith. The best scores in the golf match were as follows:—R. C. Saunders, 1 upK. J. McMenamin, A. T.
