SUSPENSION OF LICENCES
DEPARTMENTAL ACTION NOT FAVOURED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 7. It is believed that the Government will not grant the Transport Department the right to suspend either motor-drivers’ or motor-cyclists’ licences for short periods for road offences. The Minister of Transport (Mr W. S. Goosman) is understood to have reached this decision after considering proposals by the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union. _ The union had suggested that the department be given power to suspend motor-cyclists’ licences where it was evident from a motor-cyclist’s record that he was a menace on the roads. The Minister is believed to have decided not to sanction any action that would impinge on the jurisdiction of the Courts. New legislation to deal with road safety is being prepared, but it is doubtful whether it will be introduced to Parliament this session.
