MELBOURNE AIR SERVICE

REDUCTION IN FARE NOT POSSIBLE (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, October 7. An adjustment of fares on the Mel-bourne-Christchurch air service as suggested could not be made because costs of operation had increased considerably and the current revenue was likely to fall short of those costs, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) in a letter to the South Island Local Bodies Association, which was discussed in Timaru tonight by the executive. “Tasman Empire Airways say that the fare between Christchurch and Melbourne is the same as that between Auckland and Sydney, and almost the same as that between Wellington and Sydney, and does not provide for any extra mileage because of occasional diversions through Cook Strait,” Mr Holland said. On the recommendation of Mr H. S. Feast (Christchurch) the executive decided to ask the Prime Minister to supply the comparative operating costs on the three routes. “He has not told us anything that we did not already know,” said Mr Feast.
