SPRING SHOWS
SCARGILL The annual spring shew of the Scargill Horticultural and Home Industries Society was held recently. Although a sudden snowstorm a few days previously caused the cancellation of many entries in the daffodil and cut flowers sections, the standard of blooms was particularly high and the show generally was commended by the judges. The following awards were presented by Mrs J. Gardner:— Children’s Section.—Daffodils: M. Saunders and D. Saunders. Cut flowers: Janet McNaughten. Decorative: Marion McNaughten. Needlework: Janet McNaughten. Cookery: Suzanne Gibb. Handcraft: Wayne Greig. Most points in children’s section: girls, Barbara Ellis; boys, Brian Gardner. Adult Sections.—Most points in daffodils (open classes): Mrs Dalgety, 91J; C. Burrows 43. Daffodils (Waipara County): G. A. Greig 49, C. Burrows 44. Daffodils (novice): Mrs J. Slack 26, E. L. Gibb 12. Novice bloom: Mrs T. N. Gardner. Trumpet daffodil: G. A. Greig. Large cup: C. Burrows. Small cup: G. A. Greig. Best daffodil in show: C. Burrows. Cut flowers: Mrs R. D. Andrew 25. Mrs Slack 17. Decorative: Mrs R. Sloss 24J, Mrs Overton 9. Novice decorative exhibit: Mrs Geo. Gardner. Needlework: Mrs R. J. Whyte 13, Mrs T. Baxter 12> Cookery: Mrs G. A. Greig 20. Mrs J. Most entries in the show: C. Burrows. Most points in the show: Mrs Dalgety 94J. C. Burrows 87. SHEFFIELD The Sheffield Horticultural Society held its spring show recently. Judges from Christchurch were impressed by the standard of exhibits. The show was a record in the number of entries and in attendance. Sections winners were:— Daffodils.—Open: Mr L. P. Hawke; amateur, Mr L. D. Adams; novice, Alistair Adams-; children, Anthony Greening. ' Decorative.—Open, Mrs D. J. Jenkins; novice. Miss M. Adams; children under 14 years, Esther Eaves; under 10 years, Lindsay Johnston. Cut Flowers.—Children, Esther Eaves; open, Mrs S. Aldridge. Photography.—Open: Mr R. Drummond; amateur, Mr R. O. Clark. The cup for most points in the show was won by Mr L. D. Adams, with 81 points.- The runner-up was Mr L. P. Hawke, 79 points, who won the champion daffodil award.
