UNION DISPUTE AT ROXBURGH
230 MEN ATTEND MEETING
RETENTION OF PRESENT AFFILIATIONS URGED (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 7. A resolution calling on other unions at the Roxburgh hydro-electric project to cease their efforts to negotiate with the contractors on the job was carried at a meeting of the Roxburgh Hydro branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, according to the secretary of the branch (Mr L. W. Frost). The resolution had not been officially conveyed to the associated unions this afternoon. Mr L. F. Evans, secretary of the Otago Trades Council, was told of the resolution by a reporter. Mr Evans then commented; “The New Zealand Workers’ Union refuses to recognise the inevitable. It has no legal standing so far as its attitude is concerned.” Mr Frost said the meeting at which the resolution was carried was attended by about 230 men, and was addressed by Mr C. Hair, general secretary of tne New Zealand Workers’ Union.
“The men up here are determined that, if it is possible and if it is lawful, they will remain with the union which has stood by them in the past,” Mr Frost said. ,r lt was through the efforts of the Workers* Union that our conditions became so good. We have a delightful village, which we could show to anyone with pride, and we owe the Workers’ Union a debt of loyalty.”
