NEW TRANSPORT BUSES

APPROVAL FOR ALL ROUTES

CITY COUNCIL DECISION

Permission for the Christchurch Transport Board to operate its new buses (33ft in length and 12 tons 9cwt in laden weight) on all the existing bus routes within the city boundaries was granted by the City Council last evening. subject to overloading being prohibited. Actual routes to be used will be defined from time to time by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority Ine works committee asked that it should be consulted in all but minor alterations. The following conclusions were reported from the recent joint meeting of the Transport Board and the traffic ana works committees: — “The existing bus routes are satisfactory, but amendments may be necessary from time to time. Both parties agreed to consider the effect of oneway traffic around the block bounded by Carlton Mill road, Rossall street, and Rhodes street. Changes from Square “The board agreed to consider: (1) the Avonside buses entering via Armagh street, Colombo street to Gloucester street near the State Theatre and going outwards via Gloucester street to Manchester street; (2) the loading of Riccarton buses in Worcester street immediately west of the Square; (3) the-re-routing of the Cranford street-Lincoln road service via Colombo street, Armagh street, Oxford terrace or Colombo street-Oxford terrace to Hagley avenue; (4) the New Brighton service (when linked with Riccarton) proceeding along Cashel street to Oxford terrace and not entering the square. Dallington buses should stop outside Dalgety’s building in the Square for disembarking passengers and not at the tram shelter outside the Bank of New Zealand. The proposed time-table for the New Brighton service should be amended so that not more than two New Brighton buses will be in the Square at any one time. The stop in front of the Cathedral should be permitted as a temporary measure only.”
