DISEASED MEAT

CARCASES NOT SOLD TO PUBLIC, RULE AT CHRISTCHURCH ABATTOIR “My attention has been drawn to recent statements which have been made by members of Parliament and which have been published in newspapers throughout the country to the effect that disease infected meat is finding its way to the public for human consumption,” said the managing director of the Christchurch City Abattoir (Mr J. H. Sproston) in a statement to “The Press’ yesterday. “For the information of the citizens of Christchurch I wish to state quite definitely that as far as the Christchurch City Abattoir is concerned there is absolutely no possibility of any condemned carcase, or any portion thereof, being sold to the Christchurch public for human consumption. Only carcases passed by the meat inspectors as fit for human consumption are allowed to go down to the holding floor for ultimate delivery to Christchurch butchers.. Any condemned carcases go down a separate ramp and are delivered by a shute direct into motor-trucks for delivery to nearby boiling down works. This can be confirmed by reference to the officer in charge of the Department of Agriculture. or to the health inspector of the Christchurch City Council. “I wish to make it clear that I am not referring to what may be done at other slaughtering places in New Zealand, only to what is the strictly enforced procedure at the Christchurch City Abattoir,” said Mr Sposton.
