SENTENCES ON CRIMINALS

INFORMATION GIVEN TO COURTS MAGISTRATE REPLIES TO U.S. CRIMINOLOGIST (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 3. The practice of obtaining reports on convicted offenders before they were sentenced was already widely followed. said an Auckland Magistrate, Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., today. Mr Wily was commenting on a reported remark by an American criminologist, Professor A. Morris, in Wellington. Professor Morris was reported to have said: “We can look forward to the day when the Courts will have the assistance of a pre-sentencing investigation of offenders, with the aim of finding the best type of treatment.” Mr Wily said that both the Supreme and Magistrate's Courts wished to know as much as possible about an offender before they passed sentence. The aim was to preserve the interests of the community, and at the same time help the offender.

The probation service in Auckland had increased considerably in recent years, said Mr Wily. Officers were being called upon more and more to give reports on. convicted persons’ backgrounds. Increased staff and the use of more modern'methods gave the reports increasing value.. The procedure was not new, he said.
