‘Watchdog’ Committee Reports On Budget (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 8. The United Nations Treasury (“Watchdog”) Committee, composed of delegates of nine countries, to-day prescribed a cut of. 990,900 dollars in the 1953 budget estimate of 47,765,200 dollars. The estimate was, furnished by the Secretary-General (Mr Trygve LaC). _
Staff reductions, a heavy cut .in the ear fleet, the cutting down of long speeches and documents, the avoiding of duplication and of overlapping work were among the committee’s proposals to reduce costs. Although his budget is oelow that for 1952 Mr Lie has said that he would have to add supplementary sums late>The committee said that this supplementary figure might run as high as 3,000,000 dollars. Even without that the expenses of «ight United Nations specialised agencies would bring appropriations up to 82,467,868 dollars, or 160,150 dollars more than this year’s appropriations. The committee said that it was awaiting Mr Lie’s proposals fpr reorganising the secretariat to cut down eight highly-paid Assistant SeeretariesGeneral to three or four Principal Directors.
Mr Lie’s report, issued simultaneously with the committee’s, said that he had saved 200,000 dollars by reducing jobs, and that the United Nations staff had just about stabilised itself at its present figure of 4013.
Queensland Molasses for N.Z,—A refcbrd cargo of Queensland molasses Will be shipped to New Zealand in the freighter Waiana, which is loading 9000 drums of molasses at Mackay and which will load about 1000 drums at Brisbane. The total shipment of 5300 tons will be discharged at Wellington, New Plymouth, and Auckland for conversion to stock foods. —Brisbane, September 9.
