The shortage of farm labour, an opera engagement, and marriage, were among reasons submitted in late appeals heard by the Military Service Postponement. Committee here to-day. Decision was reserved in the case of Cyril Kelleway, who applied for postponement on the ground of his engagement by the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society for the leading tenor role in the forthcoming production of “The Bartered Bride.”

/‘Good tenors are extremely scarce.’’ said Mr W. Laird Thompson, secretary of the society, giving evidence on Kelleway’s behalf. “The success of the production depends largely on him.’’ Postponement until January, 1953. was granted to Robert Taylor “through the good heart of the committee.’’ Taylor had just been married and was on his honeymoon. His father appeared on his behalf. Several university and night school students were granted postponement until next year.

Two appeals against service in K Force were heard. One was the case of a trainee—now serving a court‘nrartial sentence—who pleaded hardship. The committee recommended that he be released from the Army.
