SWIMMING

CENTRE’S ANNUAL MEETING

STANDARD PROGRAMME FOR CARNIVALS The management committee of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was reduced in number from about 40 to a maximum of 11 at the annual meeting of the centre last evening. This was done by abolishing club representation. There was some criticism of the move, on the ground that the interests of smaller clubs might be neglected. In support of the proposal, the secretary (Miss Doreen Brown) said that attendances at meetings of the management committee during the last year had been poor, and it was thought that a smaller and less unwieldy committee would be keener. The centre adopted a standard programme for all Saturday afternoon interclub carnivals. This programme is: 25 yards freestyle, boys under 14; 25yds freestyle, girls under 14; 50yds freestyle, boys and girls under 17; 50yds freestyle, open women’s; 50yds freestyle, open: 100yds freestyle, open; 220yds freestyle, open; 100yds breaststroke, open; 100yds backstroke, open; three-length medley, open; four-a-slde freestyle relay, open, at least two comoetitors to be under 17; three-a--side-medley relay, open; and dive, open, one standing, one running, and one optional; all events except the dive to be handicap. Officers were elected as follows:

President, Mr G. R. Laurie: vice-presi-dent, Mr D. W. Cain; secretary. Miss Brown; treasurer, Mr R. D. Harker Brown; executive, Messrs A. K. Archer, H. McFadden, R. S. Lester, and Mrs L. W. Piper; handicapper. Mr Cain; delegate to the national council, Mr N. Robertson; delegate to water polo control board, Mr M. Duckmanton; local officer. Mr McFadden.
