Hoax Draws Children
“Every child under 12 years of age entering the London Pie Shop on Sun-, day, August 17, 1952. will receive free one sixpenny ice cream.” This advertisement, appearing on the front page of the Wairarapa “Times Age” on Saturday afternoon must have been read by every child for miles around. The news was passed on by word of mouth to those who could not read and by 9 o'clock the children were forming up. There was one catch. The proprietor. Mr D. Wilmshurst, knew nothing about the free offer. As soon as he heard of the advertisement Mr Wilmshurst consulted the police who advised him to post a disclaimer in his shon win dow. This was done and while undoubtedly a disappointment to the ol'der children, did nothing to stop the flow of youngsters who had not yet learned to read. The newspaper has already instituted inquiries.
