Mr R. M. Scotten, American Ambassador to New Zealand, who is on leave in Japan with Mrs Scotten, is due at Sydney on August 30 and will leave on return to Wellington in the Wanganella on September 4. Miss Sylvia Fox (Victoria Mansions) has given to the Canterbury Society of Arts an oil painting “An Old Salt,” by W. Hounsom Byles, R.B.A. Mrs L. Woodcock (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Spreydon Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs E. Bowden conducted devotions and Mrs Woodcock reported on mental hospital visiting. Mrs P. Murray gave the temperance fact Mrs E. Bowden gave the district executive report. Members were reminded of Mrs Toomer’s visit and of the district convention that will open on September 9 when the Rev. W. T. Blyth will be the speaker. Mrs Ancall gave a talk bn the foundations and aims of the union’s work, and Mrs Woodcock thanked her.
A motion of sympathy with Miss Grace Neale in the death of tter mother was passed at the monthly meeting of the Glenelg Health Camp management committee last evening. Miss Neale has been a kind and helpful friend to Glenelg and the children there for some years. At an afternoon social held in the Pensioners’ Memorial Hall, Worcester street west, in spite of very bad weather, the Christchurch Women’s Institute Centre provided for the members a very enjoyable programme consisting of songs, sketch, and drama, which was much appreciated. Mrs P. Murray (Miramar) won the Wanganui women’s provincial golf title at the Belmont links last week by beating Mrs. R. Fullerton-Smith (Marton), 1 up. Mrs Murray, who was the holder of the title, made her entry into first-class golf in the Dominion when, as Miss Patsy Bell, she was a leading player in Wanganui. The Home Office has approved a design by Mr John Wain, aged 64, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, for the decoration of Coronation souvenir- ware. It will appear on £5,000,000 worth of ware for export and for the home market. Mr Wain’s design is a bas-relief head of the Queen in tones of bronze and old gold on a pale blue background. On either side of the centrepiece are the Union flag and the Royal Standard, and at the base of the design are supporting motifs. Production of export Coronation ware will start in September.
