PAY FOR WORK ON HOLIDAYS
BUILDERS’ SUGGESTION OPPOSED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 3. Auckland bricklayers reject the suggestion, approved by the New Zealand Federation of Master Builders at its conference last week, that some paid holidays should become national service days with the workers receiving their normal pay rates and employers paying the holiday pay margin into a national benevolent fund. “The workers would be deprived of a holiday but the employers would lose nothing because they would be paying out money they would have to pay out in any case,” said the secretary of the Auckland Bricklayers’ Union (Mr W. T. Quealy) to-day. nie employers took holiday pay into account in computing costs, he added. Therefore the cost of holiday pay was spread over the whole community through the price system.
