YOUNG CONTINGENT’S ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Young Contingent of the Victoria League was held last evening and was very well attended. Miss Jean Anderson (vicepresident) presided. Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp (president of the Victoria League) moved the adoption of the annual report, a precis of which was published in “The Press” last week, and thanked the members for their continued enthusiasm and good work. Warm tributes were paid to the splendid service given to the contingent during the last two years by the honorary secretary, Miss Elizabeth Williams, who did not seek reelection.

It was decided to hold an Empire Day ball in May and to make this gathering an annual event, to be held on or near Empire Day. Members decided to issue a quarterly bulletin, detailing the contingent’s activities and giving extracts from letters received from overseas, both from members and from the recipients of gift? of food, clothing and money. The following officers were elected: president, Miss Nancy-Northcroft; vicepresidents, Miss Anderson and Mr Stuart Nicholls; secretary, Miss D. Redgrave; treasurer, Miss Jean McLellan; committ.ee: Misses Judy Anderson, Beatrix Harper, Rosalind Roy Smith, Diane Smith, Belinda Williams, Messrs lan Baird, Murray Loughnan, Cyril Maude, Garry Sandston, and James Will. .

DICKENS FELLOWSHIP

Four new members were elected at the annual meeting of the Dickens Fellowship, at which the president (Mr B. F. Hayman) presided and welcomed Miss B. B. Taylor, who has'returned from a trip overseas. After the business meeting a review was given by Mr A. E. Caddick on the two works of Dickens that will be studied by the Fellowship—“ Hard Times” and “The Uncommercial Traveller.”

Officers were elected as follows: president. Mr H. S. Cordery; vicepresidents, Mrs L. J. Morris, Misses B. Craig, G. Jarman, E. Stocker, Messrs Hayman, Caddick, S. D. Wilson, N. Stouppe; secretary, Mrs J. Allott; treasurer. Miss E. Bull; committee, Mesdames W. Dailey, E. Granger, J. Harland, J. Prescott, Miss M. Packard, Messrs A. Edgeley, J. Railton, J. Prescott; librarian, Miss Packard; supper convener, Miss V. G. McLean; auditor, Mr L. J. Morris.

FUNDS FOR EVENTIDE HOME

Although there had been no public appeal for funds for the Eventide Home for elderly women, donations had amounted to £1276, said the superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association (Mr A. J. McEldowney) at the official opening of the home on Sunday. The total cost of the home had been £10,743, for which the Government had provided a5O per cent, subsidy. “We have still to raise £4006 from our friends,*' he said.
