GASWORKS
Sir,—Being a resident living within half a mile of the gasworks, I think it is about time that the City Council got on with the job. I would like to know what good a talk with the residents could do, as suggested by Mr R. M. Macfarlane. A petition signed bv 200 residents, which could easily hhve been increased to 500, was presented to the City Council some two years ago. This is evidence that a genuine complaint exists and no amount of talking will improve the position or convince the people that gas fumes are healthy. The Gas Company is evidently sitting tight, hoping '•hat the agitation will be dropped and the City Council appears to be doing likewise.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER RESIDENT. March 3, 1952.
Sir,—l quite agree with your correspondent; “Resident.” As one who lives within reach of the gas fumes and soot from the gasworks, I should like to be advised what the Gas Company has done to abate the nuisance that forces the people to live in' such an unhealthy atmosphere. Mr McCombs states that the Gas Company has done what it could without completely reconstructing the works. I am informed that the extent of its efforts and expense has been to provide a sprinkler—tn keep the dust down, which has no effect on the gas or soot. I have recently had my house painted, and have watched it change several shades darker within two months. I have also been advised by a leading nurseryman that certain shrubs cannot live in this district because of the gas; so 1 wonder what effect this filth has on our health.—Yours, etc, RESIDENT No. 2. March 3, 1952.
