7d A Dozen More In South Island

WINTER PEAK NOT YET REACHED

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, February 21. The retail price of eggs in the South Island will be increased by 7d a dozen from Monday. A price order authorising this increase is published in the Gazette to-night. The chairman of the Egg Marketing Committee (Mr J. Moriarty) said to-night that there would be at least one more increase before the peak price for the winter was reached. The new maximum retail trices for fresh eggs, which will be effective in Christchurch on Monday, are: heavy grade, 5s Ojd a dozen; standard, 4s 10d; medium, 4s 5Jd; pullet, 3s lid; mixed, ss. The maximum retail prices for chilled eggs will be: heavy, 4s BJd; standard, 4s 6d; medium, 4s lid; pullet, 3s 7d; mixed, 4s 3d. The maximum retail prices for duck eggs in Christchurch will be: large, 4s lOd; small, 4s sjd; mixed, 4s 7a. Prices throughout New Zealand will be raised by 7d a dozen from Monday with the exception of the Auckland province and Hawke’s Bay, where the price increase will be 5d a dozen. From Monday the comparative maximum retail prices for heavy grade fresh hen eggs in the various centres will be: Wellington, 5s 4Jd a dozen; Westland district, 5s 3Jd; Auckland Province, 5s 2|d; Nelson and Blenheim, 5s Id; Christchurch and Dunedin, 5s o}d. “This is the normal seasonal increase at this time of the year,” said Mr Moriarty to-night. "However, there will be at least one more increase before the peak price for the winter is reached. At this time last year the peak winter price had been reached with a rise at the time of Is 3d a dozen.”
