PAN-PACIFIC WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

Sir,—Can it be said to be in the interests of peace or good understanding when a delegate of the Pan-Pacific Women’s conference stood up to-day at a public meeting, at the Radiant Theatre and referred disparagingly to the “Iron Curtain” country, and said that the United States was putting up 'an extra powerful broadcasting station to let the poor Asians know the truth? If there were delegates from the U.S.S.R.,- to present their side, it might have been less regrettable. Surely it is desirable to try to lessen the dreadful tension between the U.S.A. and the US.S.R., and not merely line up foreign countries on either side.—Yours, etc., PEACE LOVER. January 24, 1952.

Sir,—l was greatly struck last night at the meeting of the Pan-Pacific Women’s conference by the words of Miss Schain, to the effect that in New Zealand we have so much material prosperity, and should therefore be giving the world a lead in social welfare. We often feel helpless with our small population in the face of the world’s need; but I feel there is one thing we could do to help. Why not open' our medical school to more of our own young people, and to those of other Pacific countries, so that an army of doctors could go out from us to help in the tremendous task of uplifting the less fortunate Pacific peoples. I am sure that our v oun? people would respond to the call. Of course there are many practical difficulties, but greater ones than these have been overcome in the past.— K.M.T. January 25, 1952.
