TRAMWAY RATES

Sir,—ln your issue of December 14 you report that the Waimairi County Council received with regret and disgust a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs rejecting a petition of ratepayers who asked for the abolition of tramway rates. If toe council is really interested in all of toe ratepayers instead of the few who signed toe petition, it will use its efforts to secure toe return ef the tramway bus service to which we are justly entitled. The saving in the difference of fares will not only pay our rate but also show a surplus. Papanui riding ratepayers should demand toe same fares as other tramway ratepayers instead of toe 60 per cent. Christchurch-Nortocote and toe 100 per cent. Papanui-Northcote higher than tramway fares. Die tramways have recently taken over all other private services. When is our turn coming?—Yours, etc.. NORTHCOTE. December 17. 1951. [The chairman of the Waimairi County Council said, when this letter was referred to him, that toe council was unanimous in its support of toe removal of toe tramway rate in toe whole of toe Papanui riding. ’"The council took the initiative on behalf of all ratepayers prior to 1948 in petitioning Parliament on toe matter. Ax for as the fares and the question of toe resumption of the tramway bus in this area are concerned, these matters are under toe jurisdiction of the transport company and toe Christchurch Transport Board respectively,” he said.]
