CURRENT NOTES

Lady Price, wife of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand (Sir Ray Price), will be a guest at the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association conference at Christchurch in January. Mr and Mrs E. C. Ellison (Puriri street, Riccarton), who have been on a seven months’ visit to Britain and Europe, returned to Sydney by the Strathaird and will arrive -in New Zealand in the Wanganella on Monday. Miss Dorothy Bates (Sydney) will arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday to visit her mother, Mrs David Bates. Fendalton. Miss Joan Durikley (Fendalton), who has been absent from the Dominion for about two years on a visit to Europe and England, is returning by the Rangitane and is expected in Christchurch during the third week in January.

Dr. W. J. Jarvis and his wife, Dr. Anne Jarvis, have both recently graduated from the Otago Medical School as Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery. Dr. W. J. Jarvis is well known as a former New Zealand swimmingchampion, a New Zealand champion beltman. and a representative water

polo player. During the war he served with the Royal Air Force, gaining the rank of squadron leader, and was a station controller in Normandy on DDay. Dr. Anne Jarvis was cipher officer of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and met her husband in England during the war. With their two children they will go soon to Wanganui, where Dr. Jarvis will take up an appointment at the Whangarei Public Hospital. About 50 children attended a Christmas party on Tuesday at the Rutland street nursery play centre. The hall was gaily deeorated, and the event of the afternoon was the arrival of Father Christmas with balloons and present? Mrs E- B. Dalmar, secretary of the Christchurch Nursery Play Centre Association, attended and wished the children a happy time. At tea the president (Mrs Saunders) thanked the secretary (Mrs Walker) on behalf of the committee for her work in organising the party. She also expressed the thanks of the mothers to the supervisor (Mrs Paton), and the assistantsupervisor (Mrs Flavell), for their work during the year. A spray was presented to Mrs Paton. Mrs K. Mundy presided at the Christmas party held bv the Rich mond Townswomen’s Guild. Member; of the Christchurch area federatior and sister guilds were guests. Th< musical programme included carol; and songs bv Mrs Jarden, a recitatior by Graham McCulloch, dances by Bar bara Hicks and Margaret Pauling, ant the pupils of Mrs Cannon. The accompanists were Mrs F. E. Scott anc Mrs Hickling. Mrs A. C. Hoyle was presented with the prize for mosi points gained in the competition foi the best bloom. Members of the North Christchurch Garden Club held a Christmas party at the Takahe recently. Mrs I. M. MacKenzie presided and welcomed more than 60 members and friends. Songs were sung bv Mrs Linda Haase, for whom Mrs W. E. Olds was accomSanist, and recitations were given by [rs Barnett. Mrs Lake described a visit to Longbeach. A lucky tea plate competition, organised by Mrs McKenzie, was won by Miss Ealam. Many guests, including the Rev Fathey P. Heagney, S.M., and senioi pupils of the college who are leaving this year, attended a Christmas party given last Tuesday evening by the St Mary’s Convent Old Girls’ Association The programme of entertainment included humorous sketches by Mis; Loraine Shaw, and the showing oi Christmas films. Christmas carols, arranged by Miss Dorothy Blake, were sung.
