£14,000 BEQUEST TO UNIVERSITY

FUND FOR GRADUATES’ SCHOLARSHIPS

STUDY IN UNITED KINGDOM AND EUROPE

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 7. A bequest valued at some £14,000 has been received by the Senate of the University of New Zealand for the establishment of a scholarship open to graduates with masters’ degrees in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law or Divinity, to enable them to 'study abroad.

Announcing this to-day the Senate stated that at its last meeting it accepted a valuable bequest of the late Miss Evelyn Watson and expressed its warm appreciation of the public spirit and interest in university education which prompted the gift. The value of the estate is in the neighbourhood oi £14,000.

This capital sum will be used to establish a scholarship open to graduates. By the terms of the bequest the general purpose of the scholarship is to enable the holder to study abroad questions of international relationships and social and economic conditions. The first year of the scholarship is to be spent at a university in England or Scotland, and the second year at a university in Europe, Asia, or America. A special selection committee will be established. Miss Watson was the sister of Mr G. G. G. Watson, a well-known Wellington lawyer, who will be among the members, of the first selection committee. Miss Watson was a graduate of the university and was at one time a lecturer at Victoria University College. The scholarship is to be known as the “Gordon Watson Scholarship,” in memory of Miss Watson’s nephew who was killed in action in Italy in the last few days of the war. His grandfather. Mr Clement Watson, was a former chairman of the Victoria University College council.
