GOLF TASMAN CUP

AUSTRALIA RETAINS TROPHY

NEW ZEALAND FAILS IN SINGLES

(Nsw Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 17.

By winning three singles after having the worse of the foursome* in the morning, the Australian women’s golf team today beat New Zealand In the Tasman Cup match at Mlddlemore by three and a half point* to two and a half. New Zealand in the morning won one foursome and halved the other. In the afternoon it won only one single. This was Australia's third successive post-war victory, and its fifth in the eight contest* since Boon after the single* had started. Australia's prospects of retaining the cup became much brighter. Miss M. Bishop holed out an awkward putt and then chipped out in an eagle 5 to setae the initiative from Mis* Z. Hudson. Miss P. Borthwick scored two birdies against Miss R. C. Hodges, and after six holes she. too. was apparently on the way to success. Miss Margaret Hughes began with a 3, and won four holes in the first five in her match with Miss Joan Fletcher, but at the tail of the field Miss Judith Percy was playing well against Mrs H. A. Murray, who failed with some important putts. Hatt-way through the afternoon it seemed certain that Australia would win. Mis* Borthwick, had she taken 4’s for the last two holes, would have gone round in 71, and Miss Bishop needed only one 4 for a 73. Mis* Bishop was feeling the strain when her drive to the fourteenth reached only a fairway bunker, and Miss Hudson, with a sound 4, became 1 down. Miss Hudson misjudged th* length of her first putt at the fifteenth, and failed with the succeeding 4ft putt. Mis* Bishop thus became 2 up With three to play, and they halved the next two holes. Mrs Murray, 2 down with six to play after inning th*-twelfth, put her approach putt at the short thirteenth dead, and Mis* Percy lay a good-Mt away. MSss Percy, however, holed her putt for a half. Mrs Murray, at the fourteenth, cut her drive into a bunker, and was stymied at the sixteenth. After winning the third hole, 4 to 5, Miss Hodges lost at the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth. From the eighth hole, she and Miss Borthwick were level until the last hole of the match, the sixteenth. Miss ERighes was out in 38, against Miss Fletcher, and at the next five hole* had scratch figures. Result* were (Australian names first): Foursome* Miss P. Borthwick and Miss M. Bishop halved with Miss Z. Hudson and Mrs if A. Murray. Mis* J. Fletcher and Miss J. Percy lost to Miss R. C. Hodges and Miss M. Hughes. 3 and 1. • Single* Miss Bishop beat Miss Hudson, 2 and Borthwick beat Miss Hodges, 4 and Miss Fletcher lost to Mis* Hughes. 5 and Miss Percy beat Mrs Murray. 4 and 2.
