CHAMPION MAKING GOOD PROGRESS

Beaumaris is making pleasing progress in his preparation for spring racing. The Beau Repaire five-year-old took the honours in his seven furlong gallop on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday with Trinidad, Royal Tan, and Royal Monarch. Another feature of the training was a half-mile sprint by four two-year-olds. The Neptune—Barrosa colt in W. Barr's team and the Pherozshah filly. Mish Mish. showed to advantage. Gallops on the course proper were by arrangement. The rest of the fast work was done on the plough and the No. C grass.

Trinidad (C. T. Wilson) and Royal Monarch (J. T. Anderson) jumped away from the seven furlongs a length find a half in front of Beaumaris (R. W. Gould), with Royal Tan (N. Eastwood) two lengths further back.

Beaumaris started to improve his position racing to the half-mile, and he soon moved up on the outside of Trinidad and Royal Monarch. Galloping very freely, Beaumaris reached the post a neck in front of Trinidad. Royal Monarch was a length away third, and Royal Tan was another length back fourth.

The seven furlongs took Imin 31sec, and the last half-mile 50 l-ssec.

Beaumaris will probably race next in the Timaru Challenge Stakes at Washdyke on October 6. Neptune Colt Impresses The Neptune—Barrosa colt (R, Forward) gave Mish Nish (L. J. Ellis). Park Avenue (N. Eastwood), and Doctor Pippin (D. J. Thistoll) a start from the hatfmile and beat them home. The colt ran the distance in 48 3-ssec.

The Neptune colt made up his ground quickly over the first furlong and a half and at the finish he was a neck in front of Park Avenue and Mish Mish, which was running on well at the finish. Doctor Pippin tailed off after about two furlongs, and finished four lengths behind Mish Mish and Park Avenue. Te Kooti (J. T. Anderson) beat his stablemate. Fairest Way (C. T. Wilson) by a neck over half a mile, which took 51 2-ssec. Fairest Way led In the early stages, but Te Kooti closed on aer without any difficulty. Two other members of C. G. Skelton) by three lengths over half a mile, which was run in the smart time of 50 4-ssec. A member of J. A. Cox’s team, the Timanova filly will probably make her debut at Washdyke. Ridden by his trainer, L. J. Ellis, Chief Stuart half a mile in 54 2-ssec. This Royal Chief gelding, a close relative of the champions Kindergarten and Golden Souvenir, has shown ability in his recent training tasks. Shaken up near the post, Kingsmead (M. Prendeville) beat Modern Times (C. T. Wilson) narrowly over a mile In Imin 47 3-ssec. They ran the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec Detective (R. A. Muir) and Metif (P. Rosewarne) were abreast on completing six furlongs tn Imin 17 3-ssec. the last nalf-mile in 52 4-ssec. Detective was well supported in the Geraldine Cup last Monday, but he weakened into twelfth nlace after leading to the straight. The stablemates. Major Coronach (G. Ridgway) and Bob's March (P. H. Jones) sprinted half a mile in Slsec, and finished on terms.

On the plough, Argonaut (B. Gordon) and Hue and Cry (D. M. Kerr) ran six furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssec, the last halfmile taking 54sec. Hue and Cry jumped away a length and a half in front, but Argonaut soon joined her, and they finished together. Decameron (D. M. Kerr) and Pentrip (A. J. Williams) dashed over half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Decameron, which raced last at Ashburton in May, will probably reappear at Washdyke next week,_ and his ownertrainer. F. A. AKBAR LEAVES FOR AUSTRALIA

MELBOURNE CUP ENTRANT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. September 27. The Ellerslie-trained Akbar, which has been weighted at 8-6 in the Melbourne Cup, will leave for Australia in the Wanganella this afternoon. He will travel under the care of R. Baxter, but it is likely that his trainer, K. J. Heaton, will go to Australia later. No rider has yet been announced.

A six-year-old chestnut gelding by Nizami from the Vermeer mare Pedile, Akbar has won at distances ranging from six furlongs to two miles, his win over the latter distance being in the £5OOO Autumn Handicap at Trentham last March. Last season Akbar won six of the 12 races he contested, winning £10,525, which brought his total stake winnings to £14,715. Bred by Mrs H. C. Batchelor at Cambridge, Akbar is raced by Mr N. K. Hamilton, of Bombay, India. LORD AZURE DESTROYED (New Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON, Sept. 27. While galloping at Opaki this morning Lord Azure snapped a bone above a fetlock and later had to be destroyed. Lord Azure was owned by the president of the Masterton Racing Club (Mi J. A. Betts). He won the Heathcote and Islington Handicaps at Riccarton last year, and was second in the Heathcote Handicap this year and third in the Whyte Handicap at the Wellington winter meeting. The accident occurred to-day during a training gallop. Lord Azure was returning to good form.
